Why Do I need A chimney Sweep?

Chimneys need to allow free passage of the poisonous products of combustion. Regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, helping to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Creosote is a black, sticky residue that is left inside your chimney when wood is burned or when there isn't enough ventilation. The problem with creosote is that it's highly flammable, making it one of the main causes of chimney fires. Cleaning your chimney will also increase the efficiency of some appliances and in addition to this, bird nests, cobwebs and other blockages will be removed. Birds are known to sometimes place their nests inside chimneys, the dry twigs, leaves, and debris can spark a devastating fire quite easily.

In addtion to this, a clean chimney also provides a more effective heating system at home. With better ventilation, you need less fuel to have a warm and safe chimney fire.

How Long Does A Sweep Take?

A typical chimney sweep and inspection can take anything from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. At Through The Roof, we generally allow longer time slots per customer. This is just in case something comes up that causes the service to take longer to properly complete.

How Frequently Do I Need My Chimney Swept?

Sweeping frequency will depend on a number of factors including: the type of chimney, the fuel burnt, the appliance used, frequency of use, and the moisture content of any wood fuel used.

The frequency recommendations have been outlined for you below. Please note however, that these sweeping frequencies are for guidance only.

Before We Arrive

The most important part is to remember that we are coming. It can be dangerous if an appointment is missed and your chimney is not swept. It means your household could be at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and out-of-control fires in the chimney itself. At very least your fire may not be running efficiently and you could be wasting money and causing unnecessary pollution.

From a working point of view, a clear area around the appliance so that we have enough space to work and lay down protective covers is a major advantage. It is also advised to move any ornaments from around the fire where possible and any old fuel, ash and derbies is cleaned away before we arrive.

It is also helpful if children or any vulnerable adults are not in the room whilst the work is being carried out for safety reasons. Be assured that fresh, clean dust sheets will be used for each sweep appointment.
