Stove & Open Fire Servicing

In order to make sure your appliance continues operating at its optimum functionality, it is a good practice to have regular service and maintenance carried out by a professional. One of the main considerations when it comes to investing in a wood burning stove is often the time it takes to keep it cleaned, maintained and working properly. Although wood is a brilliant fuel source for generating heat efficiently, there can be no getting around the fact that it does require some additional maintenance.

How Often Should I Service My Stove?

At 'Through The Roof Chimney Sweeping', we do recommend that you have the appliance serviced at least once annually, but this can vary depending on what you're burning. It is always a good idea to check your appliance manufacturer's instructions and adhere to their suggested timeframes where possible.

A dirty stove can potentially make your room messy, but not only this, keeping it clean will make it more efficient and can increase the lifetime of your stove, saving you money in the long term.

If you ever find yourself in a position to sell your property or are simply looking to obtain home insurance, some providers will want to see a record of maintenance work carried out. Documentation of this is providied once the service has been carried out.

What Does A Service Involve?

A typical service includes the stripping down of the stove, removing all inner panels for a full internal inspection and clean. This will allow us to check over all aspects of your installation including things such as door rope seals, air intake and Carbon Monoxide alarms.
Other areas covered are:

  • Door seal/rope replacements
  • Replacement fire bricks
  • Replacement glass
  • replacement soot boxes/trays where applicable

Disposing Of Ash From The Appliance

Hot and cooling ashes can be a fire and carbon monoxide hazard. Always make sure that you leave sufficient time after a fire to let the ash cool and keep the door to the stove closed. Ensure that all disposing of ash is done so with the correct equipment, such as safety gloves and a galvanised steel or metal ash bucket that can be sealed to collect all the unwanted ash.
